La Feria Atlanta
La Feria de Abril is one of the most popular celebrations in Spain, packed with vibrant color, dazzling movement, and mezmerizing nighttime lights. For two weeks, the people of Seville and those who flock to the city for La Feria, fill the fairgrounds to see and be seen while participating in the great Andalusian tradition of passing time with friends. They celebrate with the art of sevillanas, a time-honored dance and song with special lyrics to welcome spring.
What started as a humble livestock trading fair in 1847 is today a grand event in which generations gather to share tapas, adults enjoy refreshing rebubijos, and kids play in a park of carnival rides. One thousand giant, decorated tents, called casetas, serve as small homes where families and friends find everything they need, from the kitchen to the stage filled with live musicians who play and sing sevillanas, and also give flamenco performances.
La feria takes place annually, and begins two weeks after Semana Santa, the weeklong Easter celebration. We aim to celebrate La Feria in Atlanta at the same time that it happens in Seville, so that our festivities coincide with those on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. We hope La Feria Atlanta will give residents of Georgia an idea of a time and place in Spain where music and dance are part of the lifestyle, offering new ways to enjoy sevillanas and flamenco.
